Wild Trails Wales Guide: My favourite coastal sunset spots in Wales
Who loves a sunset? Perhaps a better question is who doesn’t?! In the years I’ve spent walking the Wales Coast Path I’ve been fortunate enough to experience some incredible coastal sunsets. Wales has so much westerly facing coastline that if you find any part of the west facing coast on a nice evening you’ll be treated to a beautiful sunset over the sea. Not all sunset spots were created equal though, and that’s why I’ve put together just five of my favourite spots along the welsh coast to watch the sunset.
Here are some of my favourite coastal sunset spots in Wales.
Glamorgan Heritage Coast, South Wales
For most of the year, other than the few months of midsummer when the sun sets over land to the west, if you head to the clifftops along the Glamorgan Heritage Coast you’ll find a spot to watch the sunset. One of my favourite walks is from Monknash to Ogmore by Sea, and timing it to finish at sunset is perfect.
St David’s Peninsula, Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
There are so many amazing spots to watch the sunset on the west facing coastline of Pembrokeshire, but one of my favourite has to be from the St David’s Head area. You can stick at sea level and stroll along the beach at Porth Mawr - Whitesands, or head over to the headland or climb up a couple of hundred metres to the outcrop of Carn Llidi for panoramic views.
Rhossili Bay, Gower Peninsula
Rhossili Bay on the Gower Peninsula is a fantastic place to take in the sunset. From the clifftops the ‘dragon’ of Worm’s Head is silhouetted, and if you walk down to the beach as the tide is going out you’ll catch reflections on the wet sand. I love watching the sunset here after a day spent walking Rhossili Down and the coast path.
Ceredigion Coast Path
The Ceredigion coast path runs for much of the central part of the west Wales coastline, and that makes it fantastic for sunsets! One of my favourite stretches to walk is between Mwnt and Tresaith, where there is a beautiful sandy beach, great at sunset.
Llyn Coastal Path
The Llyn coastal path runs from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, for 91 miles. The west facing coasts have stunning sunsets over Caernarfon bay and out to the Irish Sea. Dinas Dinlle has a huge sandy beach and ancient promontory fort.
